What is Acupuncture?

I have been practicing acupuncture now for nearly 20 years and it still amazes me at just how far reaching it’s effects can be. I love treating all sorts of health conditions, some of the most common are pain, headaches, stress and stress-related issues. I also do a lot of fertility support (as a fertility support trained acupuncturist). I am moving down to Christchurch and about to open a clinic hoping to support my local community.

But what exactly is acupuncture?

In short it is the inserting of very fine needles into specific points on the body to bring the body (and mind) back into a healthy balance. As an acupuncturist I take a full medical history before I decide where to put the needles.

It can often be quite surprising that the choice of point location isn’t exactly where you think the needles should go. For example, if you come to me for a headache I may put a needle near your toes! Depending on what I am trying to do I can leave the needles in for about 20 minutes and allow you to relax on the treatment table.

Does it hurt?

It is nothing like having an injection! When the needles go in you may feel a small nip but nothing more than a gentle pinch so it really doesn’t hurt. After the first needle is inserted you will understand that it is nothing to worry about at all! Most of my clients say it is incredibly relaxing and they walk out of the clinic feelings so much better than when they came in!

Where did acupuncture come from?

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and was first developed in China where it is still used today in most hospitals alongside more ‘modern’ medicine. Acupuncture is growing in popularity across the globe because it can be so effective for many common complaints and ongoing health conditions as well as having minimal side effects.

Does it really work?

Over the 15 years that I have been practicing this is the most common question that I am asked! The answer is yes and there is a lot more research now a days demonstrating just how effective it can be. It is very important that a practitioner has the right experience and training so please always check that your practitioner hasn’t just done a weekend course but has studied it to the right professional standards and is a member of a professional body like the British Acupuncture Council (you can check here).

Below is a video made but the British Acupuncture council explaining more about the benefits of acupuncture.

How do I know if acupuncture is what I need?

I offer free 15 minute consultations or a telephone call to discuss what is happening with you and I will always give you my honest opinion as to whether acupuncture is right for you. I will also outline the number of treatments you may need to have so that you are completely clear on what to expect for you particular treatment strategy.
